Do's and Don'ts when Contacting Coaches

• If you do not have one, create a professional email account with something as simple as your name as the address.

• Fill out the Recruiting Questionnaire on the school's respective website.

• Address your email to both the Head Coach and your specific event coach. 

• Edit and proofread your email. Run it through Grammarly or a similar editing platform. And make sure ALL names are spelled correctly! [Editing = scrutinizing content. Proofing = scrutinizing grammar, punctuation, etc.]

• Send your MileSplit or Athletic.net link showing your times and/or marks.

• Introduce yourself, and include your graduation year, name of your high school and what attracts you to the college / university to whom you're writing.

• Include your GPA, SAT/ACT scores. If you haven't taken a standardized test, let them know when you plan to take them.

• Include contact information (email preferably) for your high school coach and perhaps your club coach.

• Provide your contact information: phone and email.

• If you have registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse, include your account number. 

• It's okay to include interest in a potential major or minor. 

• DO NOT address a coach by his or her first name.

• DO NOT use a questionable or inappropriate email address.

• DO NOT send an email without having edited and proofread multiple times. 

• DO NOT send mass emails. Each coach deserves to be contacted personally.

• DO NOT include irrelevant information. Keep your email concise, yet persuasive.
